God has given humans a memory device in their brains. Soul spiritually refers to the memory device in brain, the knowledge in it, and all the works involved with the thinking process. Then, how does this soul function?
Soul works in different ways depending on what kind of knowledge we have put into our memory device. Also our soul forms our personality and standards of judgment through the functions of thinking. These standards and input criteria are important
Let's look through the works of soul in our lives and check how truthful our works of soul is.
1. One finds it hard to understand or embrace others
Some prefer fancy and unique design in fashion while others like simple and neat style more. Suppose two people watched the same movie. One thinks it was fun and enjoyed it while the other thinks it was boring and could not enjoy it. For this reason, people tend to have uncomfortable feelings towards those who have personalities or interests different from their own.
For instance, an active and open-minded person says in a direct and forthright manner that something is not acceptable. Another person takes a long time in making a decision because he doesn't express his opinion recklessly but thoroughly examines all aspects of the situation. The former may feel uncomfortable about the latter or may not be able to understand why he is the way he is. The latter may also find it difficult to talk to the former person and tends to avoid him. Then they can neither understand nor embrace each other.
It happens because they prefer only what they like and believe that what they think is right. When we can let go of what we think is right, respect others, and follow their opinions, we can embrace many people.
2. One judges others with his own standard
One who often lies thinks that others also lie. One who frequently speaks ill of others may think others also like to slander. People have different feelings and ideas about the same situation depending on the environment where they had grown up and the education they received and they judge thinking this is right and that is wrong.
We sometimes give irrelevant answers to questions. This also stems from judging. Suppose you asked someone who is often late, "What time did you come?" He may answer, "I was not late today!" He should have responded with the time he arrived, but he judged your intent thinking that you asked because you thought he was late. Sometimes you might hear a person say, "I didn't have to see it. I know what was going on." It may be right or wrong. You must not jump to conclusions and judge others.
3. One condemns others in his thoughts and feelings
Suppose a person passed by you without greeting. Some of you may condemn him saying, "He disdained me!" He might have bad eyesight or fail to acknowledge you because he has a lot on his mind. But you condemn him in your thoughts or feelings. When some people say they were healed of incurable diseases through prayer, some others might say, "How could such diseases be healed just by prayer? The hospital must have made wrong diagnosis or they mistakenly think they were healed," and condemn thinking the former lied.
Moreover, some believers in God judge or condemn the works of the Holy Spirit. When believers see the spiritual world with spiritual eyes open or communicate with God, some people say, "It is heretical. It is mysticism." In their self-frameworks they judge or condemn the same works of God as are clearly written in the Bible.
4. One delivers a word in a wrong way because of thoughts
When delivering others' message, some people add their feelings or thoughts. Then the context of the messages or meaning transferred may change because their facial expressions and tone of voice are included. When we call someone, it may be very different depending upon our tone of voice, whether the tone is friendly or angry. Moreover, if some deliver others' words in their own styles, the original meanings can be greatly changed. Some people exaggerate or minimize the contents. Or they sometimes deliver totally different messages. "It's not is it?" may be changed into "It is, isn't it" or "It could be …" into "It is set".
If you have a truthful heart, you don't distort the original message. To the extent that you have less desire to seek your own benefit, and when you do something carelessly and judge in haste, you can deliver others' messages more correctly.
5. One may have ill feeling, feel bad, and complain
Let's suppose your boss points out your mistake and says to you, "Can't you do better?" Some of you may say from the heart, "I will do better!" But some others who have held a grudge against the boss may think, 'Did he have to say it like that? Let's see how well he works!' Their ill feelings are agitated. When a boss gives advice, some people accept it with joy saying, "Thank you for teaching me." But some others have their pride hurt and think, 'I tried hard. If he knows so well then he will do it himself!' They complain and feel bad.
Why do we have the works of soul that are so far from the truth? This is because we have our own thoughts and feelings. If we don't have untruthful feelings, we won't have such works of soul. It is good not to see or hear the untruth. Even if you inevitably see untruthful things, if you think and feel in goodness, you can be protected with goodness.
