"This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin." (1 John 1:5-7)
Darkness spiritually refers to everything that belongs to sin. Untruth, unrighteousness, lawlessness, evil, and everything that is against the truth of God fall on that category. The things that the Bible tells us not to do and the things it tells us to throw away fall on the category of darkness. Light refers to goodness, love and truth, and everything that belongs to God. The things that the Bible tells us to do and keep fall on the category of light.
1. How to Have Fellowship with God
1 John 1:5 reads, "This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all." To which side do you belong, light or darkness? Do you belong to light 50% and darkness 50%? Or do you belong to light 70% and darkness 30%? Or do you belong to light 10% and darkness 90%? God is the Light 100%, and there is no darkness in Him at all. God wants His children to walk in the Light as He is in the Light. It is because if there is a little darkness in us it causes the ruler of darkness, the enemy devil, to bring afflictions and trials on us. Even the believers in God can be controlled by the devil and Satan if they live in darkness. It is because the law of the spiritual realm dictates, "You are slaves of the one whom you obey" (Romans 6:16). Just as children have close fellowship with their father and they share love with each other, God wishes for His children to have close fellowship with God and wants to share sincere love with them. As recorded in 1 John 1:7, "If we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another," we can have fellowship with God only when we walk in the Light, departing from darkness.
2. Spiritual Meaning of Walking in the Light
Let's say about a room where there are many lamps. If the lamps are turned on and shine lights, the room is bright and darkness disappears. If all the lamps are switched off, the room gets dark. In the same way, if spiritual lights are turned off within us, darkness will come upon us. In other words, if there is no word of God within us, the enemy devil approaches us and tempts us to commit sins. In contrast, when lamps are turned on, light shines and darkness disappears. Darkness must disappear because light comes. In the same way, if the Light of God enters our heart, darkness disappears instantly. When light comes upon us, whatever kind of darkness must depart from us. It is because darkness can never overcome light. That's why if we walk in the Light the forces of darkness can never rule over us. If we have departed from darkness and walk in the Light, we can be set free from all kinds of problems including diseases and poverty that came upon us who lived in darkness. The door to blessing is opened and we can receive answers from God who is the Light. And as much as we walk in the Light, we can receive the power of the Light. The stronger the light we receive, the stronger forces of darkness we can drive out. As we continually obey the Word of God telling us to do something, not to do something, to keep something and to cast off something, our spiritual light becomes stronger and we can have the greater power to cast out forces of darkness. On the contrary, if we commit sins again, we come to belong to darkness. He who belongs to darkness cannot drive out forces of darkness. Darkness can be driven out before light. The enemy devil loses its power before the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. If we become united with the Lord in faith, His power belongs to us, too. Then, we can drive out forces of darkness in the name of Jesus Christ and receive whatever we ask for in His name. The proof of becoming united with the Lord is to walk in the Light. If we walk in the Light and command in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, saying, "Diseases, disasters, poverty, afflictions, and sufferings go away from them!" everything will be done.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, 1 John 5:18 says, "We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him." Those who are born of God walk in the Light and have fellowship with God, so they cannot commit sins. Then, the evil one cannot touch them because God protects them. God promises us to give blessing in many parts of the Bible. The 28th chapter of Deuteronomy promises that if we listen to the Word of God and obey all His commandments we can receive blessings when we come in and when we go out. 3 John 1:2 says, "Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers." May you depart from all darkness and walk in the Light, and then receive all blessings, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ I pray!
